A girl's love affair with jewellery starts off early in life, when she watches her mother adorn herself with ornaments, and she proceeds to fiddle with her mother’s jewellery box and plays dress up for hours in front of the mirror waiting for the day she becomes old enough to actually wear those pieces. As she enters adolescence she watches her elder sister dress up and gazes enviously as she fingers the intricate carving on her sisters' earrings and necklaces. As she grows older that little girl routinely borrows her mother’s vintage chandelier earrings and classic lariat strings when she primps in front of the mirror, those well-preserved ornaments now doing justice to her bewitching eyes. As she bids farewell to her mother, clad in bridal finery she clutches her mother’s lucky ring and nervously touches her elaborate mathapatti, an ornament once worn by her mother on her own wedding day passed down lovingly to her, which now serves as her “something old” as well as a talisman. That girl misses seeing her mother every day as she adjusts in her new home and wears the little emerald studs she grew up seeing her wear. Finally, she lovingly passes these ornaments down to her own daughter, so she too can have a piece of her family. You see, for us women, jewellery is not just an accessory, it is a beautiful object that carries with it sentiments, sometimes blessings, nostalgia and most importantly, a memorable story.
